THE ROBBERIES CONTINUE
Thieves broke into a house in Mullaunmore, Ballon in the early hours of Sunday morning, 22 January and stole a handbag containing cash. Entry was gained by breaking a back door. However the householders greatest loss was the theft of two cars which were parked at the front of the dwelling, neither of which has been recovered at the time of writing. With the ongoing spate of robberies that this area, and indeed surrounding areas, has experienced in recent weeks people are asked to be extra vigilant. As stated previously any suspicious activities, however small, should be reported to the Gardai.

LAMBING SEASON

Dog owners are urged to be in control of their animals as the lambing season gets underway. Up to 2.5 million lambs will be born on 30,000 shepp farms across the State in the next three months. Dog owners must know where their dogs are, particularly at night. Under the Control of Dogs Act  owners are guilty if their dog is found worrying livestock and can be held liable for economic losses caused.

SPATE OF ROBBERIES
There were a number of unsavoury incidents in the parish in the last week or so.

On Friday, 13 January a Rathoe woman had a nasty experience when a man approached the parked car in which she was sitting and snatched her purse. The lady in question sped after the thief in her car but had to abandon her chase when he pulled ‘what appeared to be a small gun’ on her before getting into a getaway car and sped off in the Ballon direction. Anyone who witnessed this incident in Rathoe on Friday at about 2.15pm should contact the Gardai in Tullow.
Rothwell Engineering in Adhade was also broken into as were several other businesses and houses in Clonegal and Kildavin parish.

People are reminded to be extra vigilant as a result of this spate of robberies and are advised to report any suspicious activities, however small, to the Gardai using the number of your choice above. Please help the Gardai to help us.

9/11/11

With the onset of winter and the threat of a repeat of last winter’s display of bad temper it’s time to consider what might be done to alleviate the worse of the effects.

It is particularly important to consider the needs of neighbours who live alone or have trouble getting about when the road conditions make it unsafe.

If you know of someone who is vulnerable and not being helped then contact the garda.

Fireworks

With the advent of Halloween comes the dangers of fireworks. The dangers of unsupervised use of fireworks are very real and there have been and, unfortunately, will be serious accidents. Fireworks are illegal in this country but they get smuggled in with no control of the safety standards of the manufacturers. As a result some, particularly bangers, are potentially lethal. The duration of the fuse is often too short and they can go off while being lit.  Others have a fuse that appears to go out but is still burning unseen; leading to uncertain detonation with damage to the holder. These loud detonations can be scary to some people and particularly to animals. If you want to witness a fireworks display then attend one of the official ones and enjoy your celebration with safety.

School property

Criminal damage was carried out on the school property recently. Any persons found guilty are liable to prosecution.

If anyone has information please tell the teachers, parents /guardians, or the Garda.

No one should be on the school property without permission.

Firearm Certificates

There are a number of outstanding renewals of firearm certificates and it is important to have these updated as unlicensed weapons are liable to seizure.

6/6/11 – Traffic wisdom

At this time of the year there are a lot more agricultural vehicles using the roads. These can slow up faster vehicles, create impatience and cause some drivers to take risks when overtaking. Don’t take the chance as you will put yourself and others at risk.

At the Ballon school crossing there have been incidents when some traffic has disobeyed the school warden. Everyone should be aware of the school times indicated by the school warning lights. Any offence of this nature could occur prosecution.

29/4/11 – Sheep Worrying.

Over recent weeks there have been a number of dogs attacking and worrying sheep in the Killane area. This is stressful to the sheep and some have had to be put down.

Garda are appealing to dog owners, paticularly in this area, to keep their animals under control at all time. Dogs should be on a leash outside of the family home and not allowed to run wild.

The dog may be a family pet but can be a killer when in a pack with others.

Please let the Garda know if you have further information.

9/4/11 – Theft of Garden Equipment

There have been a number of thefts and attempted thefts of garden equipment such as lawnmowers, strimmers, chainsaws etc in the county recently. Please keep your equipment secure when not in use and make some means of identification such as photgraphs and serial numbers. Please report any suspicious attempted sale of such property.

Holiday Safety

Beware of increased pedestrian traffic during the holiday period. Walkers and cyclists should always wear high visibility clothing. Please be careful on farms and around farm machinery. If involved with water sports please follow safety guidelines.
